Food insecurity is the lack of consistent, reliable access to enough affordable and nutritious food for an active, healthy life.
It means a household does not always know where their next meal will come from, may have to skip meals, reduce food quality, or rely on low-cost, less nutritious options because of financial or resource limitations.
In California, approximately 4.8 million residents rely on CalFresh/SNAP benefits, including nearly 1.5 million individuals in Los Angeles County as of November 2025. One local official noted that her Fourth District alone—which includes parts of the San Fernando Valley—has more than 280,000 people depending on these benefits. Since 2021, Zawadi has helped address this critical need by providing a weekly food distribution that offers families an additional, reliable source of nutritious foods and prepared meals.

Zawadi food distribution
Zawadi proudly partners with FoodCycle LA to secure high-quality, nutritious food from markets such as Trader Joe’s, Jons, Bristol Farms, and Whole Foods. Through this partnership, we provide the community with free access to meats, fruits, vegetables, dairy, and frozen foods. Each week, Zawadi offers all community members the opportunity to “shop the line” and select up to two bags of items that best meet their needs, following simple guidelines. Unlike traditional food distributions, our model prioritizes dignity, choice, and accessibility.
